Snow And Ice Forecast Through Tonight

While the storm is coming to an end for parts of the East, the peak of the snow and ice will hit New England today.

A low pressure system will move along the southern New England coast today, with an associated Arctic cold front making its way across the East Coast. The majority of precipitation will be found across the Northeast, though there could be some lingering precipitation along the East Coast into the Florida Peninsula. Precipitation will quickly come to an end across the entire Eastern Seaboard late tonight.

Expect light to moderate snow showers throughout the Northeast today. However, there could be some freezing rain, sleet and rain that mixes in at times closer to the coast. Coastal areas of the Mid-Atlantic will also see a mix of snow, freezing rain and rain, with rain showers across the Southeast. A few strong to severe thunderstorms could also develop over parts of the Florida Peninsula, including Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers and Melbourne. The main threats will be damaging winds and perhaps a tornado or two.

There will be widespread snowfall amounts of 2 to 6 inches throughout the Northeast, with locally higher amounts of 6 to 10 inches in parts of northern New York and northern New England. Ice accumulations will generally be light, but even just a glaze could cause plenty of issues along and east of the Interstate 95 corridor.

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are posted across northern Maine.

Drier weather is expected across the Eastern U.S. on Wednesday, but snow returns to the forecast Thursday and Friday thanks to a new storm system.

It’s never too early to have a supply kit packed in case of inclement weather. A simple kit including a weather radio, water, blankets, batteries, and non-perishable food items will go a long way in the event of a power outage. It’s always best to avoid travel in rough weather as the roads will be dangerous.
