Sizzling Heat Turns Up Across Southeast, Central U.S.

Intense heat and high humidity will persist throughout much of the Midwest and the Southeast to close out the weekend.

High pressure over Bermuda will shift west over the south-central U.S. and Southeast by the end of the weekend. This will pump plenty of hot, humid air into the Southern Tier. Along with abundant sunshine, afternoon temperatures will climb into the middle to upper 90s. When combined with dew point values in the middle to upper 70s, it will feel more like it's in the 100s, with heat indices as high as 110 degrees possible!

One set of Heat Advisories stretch from portions of eastern Oklahoma, northern Arkansas, northwestern Mississippi, western Tennessee, southeastern Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and far southern Indiana. Extreme Heat Warnings and Watches are also in effect for eastern Kansas, much of Missouri, western Illinois, eastern Arkansas into northwestern Tennessee and southwestern Kentucky.

Additional Heat Advisories can be found stretching from central and northern Florida along the coast of South Carolina and eastern North Carolina.

If you must go outdoors, prepare by staying hydrated and keep a watchful eye for any signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Wear the right clothing, such as loose-fitting, lightweight and breathable fabrics, and take many breaks within a cool and shaded area.

Make sure to take extra precautions for children and the elderly as they are more susceptible to heat-related illness. Never leave children or animals alone in a locked vehicle as it can become dangerous and potentially fatal.
