Today's Severe Weather Outlook

A pair of disturbances will help fuel severe thunderstorms across the northern Plains and Michigan this afternoon and evening.

Starting over the northern Plains, a developing low pressure system at the surface will help draw plenty of warm and humid air northward into the region by this afternoon. At the same time, moderate to strong winds aloft will move across the region and will help lift the air, resulting in explosive thunderstorm development later this afternoon and evening.

The government's Storm Prediction Center has placed a Slight Risk across much of North and South Dakota, central Nebraska, and far western Minnesota. This includes cities such as Bismarck and Fargo, N.D., Pierre and Sioux Falls, S.D., and Valentine, Neb.

All modes of severe weather will be possible, including a few tornadoes and very large hail.

Farther to the east, another area of low pressure and associated cold front will move across Michigan today. With a warm and unstable air mass in place, a line of thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon and evening across southeastern Michigan. Here, another Slight Risk has been issued by the Storm Prediction Center, which includes Detroit.

Damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph will be the main threat from these thunderstorms today, though small hail and heavy downpours will also be possible.

A few stronger thunderstorms will also be possible this afternoon and evening from eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania southward into South and Southeast states. Localized strong wind gusts and downpours will be the primary concern from any of these thunderstorms.

Make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning should they become issued. A “watch” means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur and to be on alert for any rapidly changing conditions. A “warning” means that severe weather is imminent, and you should act fast to remain safe.

The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today's severe weather. Remember, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
