Tonight's Severe Weather Outlook

A large upper-level storm system will produce strong to severe thunderstorms across Iowa and the Northern Rockies this evening.

With a pool of cool air aloft moving over very warm and humid conditions found at the surface, this is the recipe for unstable conditions, leading to the development of scattered strong to severe thunderstorms.

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded to a Slight Risk in parts of eastern Iowa. This includes Dubuque, Iowa. Hail and damaging winds are the greatest threats associated with this upgrade.

Heavy rainfall will also be likely across portions of eastern Texas into northwestern Louisiana and southwestern Arkansas from this storm system into Thursday. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches will be possible, leading to localized flooding. As a result, Flood Watches have been posted in these areas.  It’s important to know what to do in the event of a flood and when in question, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”

A few strong to severe thunderstorms will also be possible today across the northern Rockies and Upper Midwest. Hail and wind gusts in excess of 50 mph will be the main impacts from these storms.

Make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning should they become issued. A “watch” means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur and to be on alert for any rapidly changing conditions. A “warning” means that severe weather is imminent, and you should act fast to remain safe.

The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today's severe weather. Remember, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
