Today's Convective Outlook

The northern Plains will see thunderstorms impact the region late this afternoon and evening. While gusty winds will be possible, the main concern will be large hail and even a few tornadoes. In fact, the Storm Prediction Center has placed both an Enhanced and Slight Risk areas for these threats, with the cities of Bismarck and Fargo, N.D., St. Cloud and Minneapolis, Minn., Aberdeen S.D., as well as Eau Claire, Wis. in these risk areas.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for s small portion of central Minnesota.

As an area of low pressure comes off of the northern Rockies and strengthens, southerly winds at the surface will transport warm and humid northward across the Plains. As the atmosphere is heated by a strong June sun, this muggy airmass will become unstable and thunderstorms will begin to bubble up late in the day. This convection will keep going after the sun sets as the stage has been set for a possible severe weather outbreak.

Make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning should they become issued. A “watch” means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur and to be on alert for any rapidly changing conditions. A “warning” means that severe weather is imminent, and you should act fast to remain safe.

The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today's severe weather. Remember, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
